Non-homestead property refers to any real estate that is not designated as a homeowner's primary or principal residence. These properties are typically owned by individuals or families but do not serve as their main dwelling.

Types of Non-Homestead Properties
Rental Properties: Homes leased to tenants for either short- or long-term stays.
Commercial Properties: Real estate used for business purposes, such as office buildings, retail spaces, or shopping centers.
Second Homes and Vacation Homes: Properties used occasionally or seasonally, but not as the owner’s primary residence.
Vacant Land and Investment Properties: Undeveloped land or properties purchased for future development or long-term appreciation.

This millage provides funding for:
-Teacher salaries, support staff, and utilities
-Transportation and classroom supplies
-Athletics, arts, and extracurricular programs
-Maintaining small class sizes and strong academic programs
-Meeting the State of Michigan's requirement that districts levy 18 mills in order to receive full state aid

Without this millage, Byron Area Schools would lose approximately $700,000 in annual funding.

The State of Michigan requires all school districts to levy 18 mills on non-homestead property in order to qualify for their full share of state aid.

Foundation Allowance:
The state determines a per-pupil "foundation allowance," which represents the total funding each district should receive. Revenue generated from the 18-mill non-homestead property tax is included in this calculation, and the state provides the remaining balance to meet the full allowance.

Impact of Non-Collection:
If a district fails to collect the full 18 mills, the state may reduce its funding contribution proportionally. This can result in a significant loss of revenue for the district.
